St Matthews Church, Waskerley
St Matthew's, Waskerley.
Waskeley village was built in 1850's by the Stockton and Darlington Railway Company to house the workers who maintained the rolling stock to meet the needs of the mining industry which flourished in the area. At its height there were over 250 people living there with a school, Methodist Chapel and St. Matthew’s, which was built in 1897. After the decline in mining much of the population dispersed to nearby Castleside and Consett in the 1960’s and the many houses disappeared.
