Sadler - Hillside Saddlery
Hugh trained in saddle making at Walsall College 30 years ago and initially worked at King's Saddles in Walsall which is one of the largest saddle makers in the UK. He then headed up north and set up a saddle makers in Hartington Street, Consett, then in Dipton and now back to Consett for 15 years in the appropriately named
Newmarket Street. He now mainly repairs and fits saddles as well as having a large stock for sale. He goes out to individual clients, riding schools and livery yards all over the north east to advise and fit the saddles. After our photographer left he was seeing someone near Morpeth then on to Alwinton near Rothbury. Many of the tools he uses are very specialised and not generally available so he collects old ones and some old heavy duty sewing machines too. The one he is using in these photos is at least ninety years old. At the moment he is training
another saddler so he can take more of a back seat (saddle) and travel the countryside talking to clients and assessing their needs.
