Simon constructs his wildlife-based sculptures in clay, which he fires and finishes with various mixes of oxides, stains, and slips. The process is very tactile and although he has numerous clay tools he prefers pushing and pulling the clay with his thumbs and hands to get the effect he desires. The sculptures are constructed over a simple wooden frame, bulked out with newspaper and as the firing takes place at high temperatures the paper is simply burnt off in the process. The resultant sculptures can be exhibited both indoors and outdoors.
