Nursery Worker - Beveridges Nursery
Since Elizabethan times, if not before, gardening has always been a very popular activity, from the formal gardens of historic stately homes to the cottage gardens of the workers on those estates and this has continued up to the present day. Many people find gardening helps with mental and physical health as well as giving a great deal of pleasure seeing the fabulous colours of flowers and eating fruit and vegetables produced by themselves. Gardens are also a haven for wildlife, providing food for insects and birds and helping to maintain the numbers of pollinators that are important for agriculture. They also provide corridors for animals such as hedgehogs, which are in decline, to move around to find food and safe hibernation sites.
Beveridge's Nursery on Ebchester Bank have been producing plants for all of these gardeners since 1910, and now, the fourth generation of Beveridge's run the nursery. Virtually all of the plants are grown on site in their greenhouses and then put on sale, starting around mid March.
The staff are also keen gardeners themselves. Michael, shown in the pictures here, is on the committee of the North East Horticultural Society and grows prize winning leeks as well as helping to organise their annual show at Beamish Museum.
