Phil Poxon - Artist and Painter
Phil Poxon is a local lad, he moved to the Northeast from Leicester as a teenager and went to Greencroft Comprehensive School. He has lived in various areas around Consett before settling into his current home in Leadgate.
Phil was always interested in Art and Drawing and when he left school, got a job working in an Architect ‘s drawing office. He stayed for over 10 years becoming fully trained but left when computerisation came in and digital replaced freehand drawing.
Phil then completely changed career and had spells working at The QE Hospital, Gateshead before ending up working with autistic children in Jesmond. He retired during the Covid pandemic and found himself painting increasingly during lockdown. He loves visiting galleries and exhibitions and cannot get enough of looking at art books. He now paints totally in acrylic on reclaimed wooden boards and has discovered and honed his style into what we see today.

Phil sells his work at local art fairs, markets and galleries including the White Room at Stanley and Glass Gallery at Consett. He still enjoys painting for himself but finds more and more that orders are starting to dictate what he must paint. Currently he is painting a lot of religious themed Renaissance type art and Dali inspired art and talks glowingly about the ‘Spanish Gallery’ at Bishop Auckland and the paintings ‘Christ of Saint John of the Cross’ by Dali and El Greco’s Christ on the Cross which are both currently on display. Two Spanish painters with a common theme but separated by 350 years.
Phil has developed a new twist on ‘Street Art’ crossed with ‘fly-tipping’ as he takes a large piece of his artwork into a town or city and leaves it there for someone to find and take home. He writes on the back that this Art is free, and that the person should send him a selfie via Instagram. Phil tells me he has had received some great messages from happy Art lovers. What a great idea!
