Micheal James - Painter. A little bit of Red
'A little bit of Red in every painting' is Michael's trademark. Apart from Red he uses a very limited selection of colours in his paintings and in the most recent ones this has been limited to just 4 other colours. This fits naturally into his developing style – of less is more, ‘he believes the viewer has to look into the painting to see the whole picture’, but he also realises that looking at the art says more about him than the viewer.
Michael describes himself as a Self-employed joiner and Professional Painter. He has juggled the two all his adult life aswell as family life and at the moment is happy to restrict his art to weekends.
He describes his process as, getting into the zone, preparing the reference material, choosing the canvas size and then painting the way he feels, when it all works the paint just flows. Part of the ‘getting into the zone’ involves music. Michael is an avid music fan and has an extensive CD collection in his studio, ranging from Heavy Rock bands of his youth to more recent local bands from our area.
