Pigeon Fancier
Pigeon keeping or pigeon fancying is the art and science of breeding domestic pigeons. People have practiced pigeon keeping for at least 5,000 years and in almost every part of the world. In that time, they have substantially altered the morphology and the behaviour of the domesticated descendants of the rock dove to suit their needs for food, aesthetic satisfaction and entertainment.
People who breed pigeons are commonly referred to as pigeon fanciers. The hobby is gaining in popularity again after having waned within the last 20 years.
Famous Pigeon fanciers include the Late Queen Elizabeth II, Mike Tyson (World Heavyweight Boxer), Duncan Ferguson (Scotland Footballer), Pablo Picasso (Spanish Artist) and Nikola Tesla (Inventor and Electric Car Manufacturer).

John has been a Pigeon Fancier since 2002 and has enjoyed great success racing his birds. He has won over 200 races from local federation races, National and International races over distances from 70 miles to 565 miles. However in the last few years he has only kept them to breed and does not race them anymore. Since his move to Consett, he has been supported by his wife and family and has bred over 100 winners both National and International champions. He is now so well known as a breeder of winners that people travel from all over the country to buy birds from him and he regularly sells a complete round or kit - of 24 birds from a breeding cycle to one pigeon fancier.
He may have stopped racing pigeons but he continues to be a winner.
