Hugh Penney - Handknitted Pottery
Handknitted Pottery is run by Hugh Penney in rural County Durham, halfway between the famous cathedral city of Durham and the wild landscape of Weardale.
Hugh's makes mugs, bowls, teacups, noodle bowls, teapots, salad bowls and some purely decorative items. Most are thrown on a wheel, but he does make some hand-built pottery as well, mostly in stoneware, but he occasionally makes pieces in porcelain, and also earthenware, especially for pieces with decals (ceramic transfers) on.
As well as making pottery, Hugh also runs workshops and one-to-one lessons, he also hires out the studio to anyone who has done a course with Hugh, or who knows enough to make ceramics on their own without any help, so they can use all of the facilities to make their own pottery.
During my visit, Hugh was assisted by Gracie who was mixing the glazes used in finishing the pots, hence the extreme mask she was wearing!
If you fancy a try at pottery why not check him out, he's moving to the Highlands of Scotland soon to enjoy some of his other interests of Potholing and canoeing, so you'll have to be quick.
