County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service
A personal project by George Ledger
These images were captured during the period November 2019 to January 2020 and the start of the Covid pandemic, when I was given access to work alongside Officers from the three Fire and Rescue Stations at Consett, High Handenhold and Stanhope.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service is dedicated to enhancing the safety of the communities within its jurisdiction, making them secure places to live, work and visit. They operate under the oversight of the Combined Fire Authority, a body of locally elected councillors who serve as members.
The geographical coverage of the County Durham and Darlington Fire Authority extends across the two authority areas of County Durham and the borough of Darlington, catering to a population exceeding 620,000 spread over an expansive area of almost 2,460 square kilometres.
The fire and rescue service is committed to providing continuous coverage, ensuring protection 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year.
The operational hub of the service is the Control Room at Service Headquarters in Belmont, where all emergency calls, denoted by the 999 emergency number, are received. Upon receipt, fire engines are promptly mobilized from the 15 strategically located fire stations within the service area. During a recent project, I had the privilege of spending time with three of these stations, namely Consett, High Handenhold, and Stanhope.
Each fire engine is equipped with cutting-edge rescue equipment to handle various emergency scenarios. Additionally, the service maintains a fleet of specialized appliances designed for specific situations, such as road traffic collisions, water rescues, and other specialized rescue operations. Firefighters undergo comprehensive training to be prepared for a diverse range of emergencies, extending beyond traditional fire incidents.
Their expertise encompasses responding to incidents like road, rail, or air crashes, floods, animal rescues, chemical spills, and even potential terrorist attacks. This comprehensive approach underscores the commitment of County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service to safeguarding the well-being and security of the communities it serves.
