Leather Worker - Laura Grey
Leather craftworkers specialise in crafting garments, footwear, and accessories from leather, employing traditional techniques and methods. Their skill set encompasses designing apparel, coverings, and various accessories such as bags and wallets. They utilise patterns to accurately measure and cut leather pieces, stitching them together either by hand or using machines. Additionally, they engage in processes like staining, waxing, and polishing to enhance the finished products. Moreover, leather craftworkers offer repair services for existing items upon clients' requests.
When Laura was made redundant in 2017 she decided to start a business making accessories for both people and dogs. Scarves, phone cases, hip flasks for the people and leads and collars for the dogs, all made with a combination of tweed and leather. As she began to make more items from leather she sought guidance from Hugh, a seasoned saddler at Hillside Saddlery. As she is an expert sewer, Hugh asked her to help in repairing horse rugs and other items, this led her to doing even more leather work making belts and repairing the leatherwork on horses tack and developing her skills in that area. So much so that she is now studying for a City and Guilds qualification in saddlery at Salisbury Saddlery Training Centre. Upon completion, Laura plans to undertake more saddlery work in the shop, stepping in for Hugh during his absence for saddle fittings and customer consultations.
