Gavin - fused glass maker
Gavin started exploring fused glass ten years ago and in 2020 converted the garage of his home in Edmundbyers into a design studio and workshop complete with a kiln, design and cutting equipment, engraving tools and four workstations.
He started offering glass taster experiences through AirBnB so participants can turn their design ideas, with Gavin's help and technical expertise, into simple but colourful glass objects. He produces more complex glass creations using the advanced techniques of glass weaving, which is a particular favourite, crackle, dropouts, slumping and pattern bars. He has studied with glass artists at the National Glass Centre, Sunderland, Warm Glass UK, Pearsons in Liverpool and Cumbria Crystal.
I saw for myself that kiln formed glass can produce results that are both unexpected but very interesting. It is fascinating to see physics, Materials Science, workshop techniques and craftsmanship working together to produce beautiful glass pieces.
