Triathalon
A triathlon is an endurance multisport race consisting of swimming, cycling, and running over various distances. Triathletes compete for fastest overall completion time, racing each segment sequentially with the time transitioning between the disciplines included.
The sport originated in the late 1970s in Southern California. This history has meant that variations of the sport were created that still exist today, distances can vary in all three elements, and the sport has led to other ‘stage races’ where not all three of the elements - swim, bike, and run elements take place.
Triathletes train to achieve endurance, strength, and speed. The sport requires focused persistent and periodised training for each of the three disciplines, as well as combination workouts and general strength conditioning.

Wild Deer Events organised a triathlon at the Derwent Reservoir recently. There were two race distances on offer, a sprint event involving a 750m swim, 20km bike ride and a 5km run or the standard length of 1500m, 40km and 10km. The weather was a bit harsh, especially for the swim, but, if they had time to look, the scenery was magnificent. There was a large turn out of competitors ranging from GB athletes to first timers. For such a complex event it was extremely well organised and everyone had a great day.
