Consett Squash Club
Squash is a racket-and-ball sport played by usually two players but sometimes four players in a four-walled court with a small, hollow, rubber ball. The players alternate in striking the ball with their rackets onto the playable surfaces of the four walls of the court. The objective of the game is to hit the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. There are about 20 million people who play squash regularly worldwide in over 185 countries. The governing body of squash, the World Squash Federation (WSF), is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), but the sport is not part of the Olympic Games, despite a number of applications.
Consett Squash Club, originally founded in the 80’s has been based out of the old (and now new) Consett leisure centre since its inception.
Like many other small sports clubs, The COVID-19 Pandemic hit the club hard and a third of the members left the club. Working with Club Durham, England Squash and the Leisure Centre management, we returned back to Squash as soon as we could through a series of phased stages, over a period of several months.
A club recovery plan was put together In August 2022, which reaffirmed the club’s purpose and to attract new members. We have been on the charm offensive ever since. The plan was given a terrific boost in March 2023 with a grant being awarded from Club Durham.
The Club is very proud to accommodate players from all levels, whether you're looking to start playing Squash for the very first time, looking to play for one of the Teams, or maybe somewhere in between. Our coaches will help you develop your game.
