Archery - Everest Archery Club
Archery is the sport, practice, or skill of using a bow to shoot arrows. The word comes from the Latin arcus, meaning bow. Historically, archery has been used for hunting and combat. In modern times, it is mainly a competitive sport and recreational activity. A person who practices archery is typically called an archer or bowman.
Everest Archery Club was formed in 2015, following on from Archery sessions run on behalf of Tantobie Community Association, this was part of funded projects linked with getting people active with a view to reducing heart attacks and diabetes. Initially sessions were held in schools both primary and secondary right across the old district of Derwentside.
As interest grew the organiser, Chris Hume started to deliver sessions in the Louisa Centre, it proved so popular that it was quickly divided into a junior session followed by a senior session. Numbers continued to grow and further sessions were added on extra days to accommodate everyone, making 5 sessions per week.
The outside sessions at Tantobie were so popular that they had to find alternative indoor venues over winter months, with Schools in Consett and Greencroft being used.
As with the rest of the world Covid meant the cancellation of all activities, Outdoor sessions at Tantobie began when restrictions were eased, and outdoor gathering were allowed. Indoor sessions returned later in 2022 but numbers were down on pre-Covid levels.
The Club is a totally run by volunteers and is a not-for-profit organisation with all funds going towards venue hire and the running of and maintenance of all equipment.
